The three rolling brothers: steel bowl, steel ball, bead top (or shaft
oh~! Don't forget the tower base, without it, you can't ride even the best bike
1. Hub body
The largest structure of the hub, the spokes, and the steel bowl are installed on it, and it has the greatest impact on the weight of the hub. It is generally made of steel or aluminum. It is required to be lightweight and combined with carbon fiber and different materials. And processing technology will be different, the effect of course also has the price!
In terms of hubs, I think the axis is the best. The hub body is connected in series, and the balls are even hollow to accommodate the quick-release lever. If these are not considered skills, then the load-bearing capacity of the entire bike, as well as the bumps and impacts along the way, have to be withstood by the axis.
This job is simply not done by humans (of course, no one can do it), if you don't have two brushes, you really can't handle it.
The materials of the shaft are generally: ordinary steel, chromium-molybdenum steel, and 7075 aluminum.
3. Ball or bearing
The softness of the balls and the bearings is the key to the smoothness of the hubs. Regarding the hubs, it is also an important question of whether they are loose balls or bearings when choosing a hub. (Follow up will follow)
The Taki carries the flywheel and transfers the output power of our thighs to the hub, which in turn drives the spokes. Of course, with Taki, we can relax when going downhill.
The Taki generally includes the tower base body, a jack, a circular circlip, and a pile of loose beads.
In fact, many brands are famous because of their special tower base structure and performance.
5. Quick-release lever
When the nut becomes old-fashioned, the quick-release lever becomes easier, and our traveling bike repair also becomes more convenient.
With the quick-release lever, we can quickly disassemble the wheels. Unfortunately, this is still useless for some riders. The dismantling of the wheels has to be done with great effort, which really makes me sad.
Generally, quick-release rods have a steel or titanium shaft. One end is a nut and the other end is a lever. However, there are also some lightweight rods that are fastened with nuts at both ends. Want to try it.
The main body of the hub, that is, the shell of the hub, the bearing, and the freewheel body are all mounted on the main body of the hub.
There are so many blue, red, and charming golden hubs that make people love it. Is there any relationship between the beautiful shell hub and the performance of the hub? When we choose a hub, what else do we need to know besides looking at this color?
1. The material of the hub shell:
The outer shell of the hub is usually made of aluminum alloy, except for recreational vehicles, which are sometimes made of iron.
The different materials used will also affect the rigidity of the hub. If the strength is too low, the faceplate will break. The hub of the hub, or the hub ear, refers to the place where the spokes are worn as shown in the figure below.
2. Manufacturing process
1). Casting + lathe processing
First, the liquid aluminum is used to generate a rough blank in the metal mold, and then the lathe is used for turning to process, and then heat treatment is performed to increase the metal strength.
Shimano’s hubs are generally produced using this process, which produces a large number of finished products at a lower cost.
2). CNC machining
The product is directly obtained by turning and other processes using a complete aluminum block. It feels cool to hear~!
Relatively speaking, the cost of products produced by this process is higher, but the apparent improvement is easy to achieve after all.
CNC machining sets of pictures, let you clearly see how the hub comes out:
3). Surface treatment
A. Anodized aluminum surface
If ordinary aluminum products are exposed to the air, they will naturally produce a layer of black oxide. Unfortunately, they are not good-looking, and they are also soft, otherwise, we won't have to be so troublesome~!
Therefore, there is a process of artificially making an oxide layer for aluminum. By immersing aluminum in a special solution, and then through a series of chemical reactions such as electrolysis of water, a dense and strong oxide layer is formed on the aluminum material, and it can be passed through Different processes produce much splendor
Come, let us take out our pockets~!
The anodized layer can not only look good but also increase the surface hardness of the aluminum material, which is more wear-resistant. Like many notebooks, MP3s, and flashlights, they are all anodized.
As pure white painting is popular, many manufacturers immediately launched corresponding products to meet the needs of car fans. The process of baking varnish seems to be mainly used to produce white accessories, but... the strength of baking varnish is still very low compared to anodized treatment, just rub it on
